Ranged Touch Non-Standard League

A community-run, semi-competitive Magic format.

For the archive of the 2021 league, see here.

What is the Non-Standard League?

It's a Magic: The Gathering league played over Untap.in, coordinated within the Ranged Touch Discord community. The format is roughly based on Magic's Standard format, but instead uses five random sets from throughout Magic's history.

Each month will constitute one season for the league, with one game per week in a Swiss-system tournament. At the end of each season, the oldest legal set will "rotate" and no longer be legal, and a new set will be added to replace it. This rotation will be managed so that exactly one "core" set and four "expansion" sets will be legal for any given season.

Players commit to playing one match per week, coordinating with their opponent to schedule appropriately.

Why are we doing this?

When we organized this league in 2021, most of us had no access to paper Magic at all. But we found that the format led to really fun deckbuilding and interesting interactions that you can't really find anywhere else in Magic. Now the goal is to have fun playing Magic in this fresh way within our Discord community.

What are the deckbuilding rules?

Decks should be constructed as if for Standard best-of-three matches using the Vintage banlist, meaning:

  • A minimum of sixty cards in the deck/mainboard
  • An optional sideboard with no more than fifteen cards
  • No more than four copies of any card in the deck and sideboard combined, excluding basic lands
  • Each card in the deck and sideboard must have been printed in at least one of the current season's sets
  • No card in the deck or sideboard may appear in the Vintage banlist
  • No card in the deck or sideboard may appear in the Non-Standard League banlist (subject to change):
  • Only one copy of a card may appear in the deck and sideboard combined if it is on the Non-Standard League restricted list (subject to change):

To help everyone build and play legal decks, we have an automated deck checker utility available.

Where do I reach out with questions?

For general community discussion, including rules clarification, theorycrafting, and seeking practice games, the best resource is the #magic-the-gathering channel on the Ranged Touch Discord.

The League is organized by Andy#3576 on Discord. Questions or concerns can be directed to them, either tagging in the RT Discord or over direct message.

What sets used for the League?

New sets will appear here and be available for rotation once they are fully released.
